Tar Heels Qualify For NCAA Track & Field Preliminaries

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sixteen student-athletes and two relay teams from the University of North Carolina track and field program will compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. The Preliminary Round begins May 25 and will conclude May 27.

ACC Champions Kenny Selmon and Ceo Ways lead the way for the men. With the nation's fastest time in the 400-meter hurdles, Selmon, a junior, is seeded first in the event. Selmon has competed in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in each of his years at Carolina, finishing third in 2016.

Ways, a senior, will be looking to return to Eugene, Ore, for the third year in a row as well in the 400m. Last year, Ways finished 20th in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Senior RJ Alowonle will be looking to head back to Eugene for the first time since 2015 as he also competes in the 400-meter hurdles. Freshman Brandon Cachon will also be competing in the event.

Senior Mark Derrick will compete in the 5,000m and the 10,000m, hoping to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time.

Carolina will once again have a men's 4x400m relay competing at the NCAA East Preliminary as well.

In the field events, sophomores Joey Souza, Zay Paschall and Darryl Shaw as well as freshman Daniel McArthur will represent the Tar Heels. Souza and Paschall will compete in the long jump, Shaw will compete in the triple jump and McArthur will compete in the shot put.

On the women's side, Carolina also has several Tar Heels hoping to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in field events.

Senior Sarah Howard, sophomore Nicole Greene and sophomore Anna Eaton and are all seeded in the top 10 of their respective events heading into the NCAA East Preliminary.

Howard looks to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in shot put for the first time since 2015 after not competing in the outdoor season in 2016. Greene will be looking to qualify for Eugene in the high jump after narrowly missing the cut-off as a freshman. Easton will also be looking to head to Eugene for the first time as she competes in pole vault. Junior Alexis Gannon will be competing in the triple jump at the NCAA East Preliminary for the second year in a row.

On the track, juniors Cierra Dunston and Blake Dodge and sophomore Morgan Ilse will represent the Tar Heels for the first time at the NCAA East Preliminary. Dunston will compete in the 400m, Dodge will compete in the 800m and Ilse will compete in the 5000m.

The women will also have a 4x400m relay team competing at the NCAA East Preliminary.
