Run To Honor Kellie Thompson Shiley
Release: 08/20/2013

ANNAPOLIS, MD. -- The first annual 5K & Family Fun run around Queen Anne County's Cross Island Trail to honor the late former University of North Carolina women's lacrosse star Kellie Thompson Shiley will occur on Sunday, September 22nd 2013.

The event is being held to honor the competitive spirit and love of physical fitness, family and friends of Kellie Thompson Shiley.   All proceeds from the run will benefit the Kellie Thompson Shiley Family Trust, which was established to ensure support for her three children.

The UNC women's lacrosse team dedicated its 2013 season to the memory of Thompson, who died unexpectedly in July 2012.  The Tar Heels won their first NCAA championship in Villanova, Pa., in May 2013.

Kellie Thompson Shiley was just 31 years old when she unexpectedly passed away after complications from giving birth to her twin daughters in July of 2012. She also left behind a loving husband and 2-year-old son. She was a one-of-a-kind person who touched so many lives and continues to inspire many. She was an accomplished scholar-athlete, trusted and hysterical friend, determined and driven co-worker, loving and supportive sister, aunt, and daughter, loyal cousin and niece, and most importantly amazing wife and mother. Holding an annual event in her honor that combines so many of her loves is just one way, for those who knew her or her story, to annually celebrate her life as well as help her children have the lives that she hoped and dreamed they would. We hope you will support this mission and event that means so much, to so many.
