After a scoreless first half, Nico Melo put the Heels up 1-0 when he took advantage of a miscue by the Elon keeper and he finished in the back of the net in the 54th minute.
The goal gave UNC a working margin that it would increase a little more than 20 minutes later when Melo sent a cross on net that Chipper Root headed home for a 2-0 Carolina advantage in the 74th minute.
Root wasn't done as he would score again in the 81st minute off a pass from Marco Sunol that gave the Tar Heels a commanding 3-0 edge.
North Carolina finished with a 14-6 shot advantage, coming up with five in the first half and nine more after intermission.
Both Brendan Moore and Sam Euler each made one save in net, while a trio of Elon keepers came up with three saves.
The match was scheduled for Bryan Park in Greensboro, but the heavy rain in the Triad forced the match to be moved to an artificial surface.
North Carolina will continue its exhibition season with matches next week against Michigan State and Indiana in Fort Wayne, Ind.
