CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Junior triple jumper Tristine Johnson will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships this week after qualifying at the preliminary round. This is her second NCAA National Championships berth in the triple jump as she also qualified as a freshman.
Johnson jumped a season-long 42-2 ½ (12.84 meters) at the last chance Georgia Tech Invitational to earn her bid to the NCAA East Preliminary. She advanced out of the first round and into the NCAA Championships trials with a jump of 41-8 ½ (12.71 meters) at the NCAA East.
Johnson will be joined in the triple jump trials by teammate Briana Hudson who also advanced out of the NCAA East. They are the first pair of Carolina triple jumpers to advance to the NCAA National Championships since Nicole Gamble and LaShonda Christopher did so in 1999. The only other Tar Heel pair to do it before Gamble and Christopher, who advanced four consecutive years together from 1996-99 and combined for seven All-America honors in the triple jump, was Kim Austin and Penny Blackwell in 1990.
