No. 25 Heels Takes Two Over Cavaliers
Release: 04/06/2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 25 UNC topped Virginia twice on Saturday, winning game one, 5-1 before taking a thrilling game two, 2-1, as the Tar Heels improved to 30-13 overall and 8-3 in conference play.

Lori Spingola earned both wins in the circle for Carolina, and Constance Orr added three hits with two RBI's for the day.

Saturday was Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day at Anderson Stadium. Prior to the game, former Tar Heel and ovarian cancer survivor Jamie Mayberry tossed the first pitch, and a silent auction raised money to be given to UNC's Linerberger Cancer Center.

GAME ONE

In the first inning, Virginia's Heidi Velk reached first and then advanced to third on a Tar Heel error. Marcy Bowdren then drew a walk, and a single to center by Megan Harris advanced Bowdren to second and scored Velk to put the Cavaliers on the board first.

The Tar Heels answered in the second with a lead off home run to center by Constance Orr, her 10th of the year.

In the third, Aquilla Mateen singled up the middle, stole second and then advanced to third on a single by Haleigh Dickey. Parrish reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Mateen to give Carolina a 2-1 lead. After a passed ball advanced runners to second and third, Orr singled to left field to drive in Mahon, who was pinch running for Dickey.

Brown drew a walk to start the bottom of the sixth and then advanced to second on a sac bunt by Amy Nece. Jenna Kelly singled, reached second on the throw and then advanced to third on an error while scoring Kristen Brown. Elisha Elliott then doubled to right center to add the fifth run for the Tar Heels.

Spingola fanned seven while pitching the complete game. She gave up just two hits while walking two.

GAME TWO

Virginia struck first again in game two, as Velk got things going again with an infield single and advanced on a single up the middle by Bowdren. A double by Alex Skinkis brought in Velk to give Virginia the early lead.

In the second, Nece doubled to left center and advanced to third on a ground out. A single by Satterfield drove in Nece to even the board, which would stay at 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh.

Parrish started the final inning off with a single up the middle. Williams came in to pinch run and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Orr. Williams then advanced to third on a single by Brown to right center. Kelly was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Walker, who reached on a fielder's choice while Williams scored while the Cavaliers committed their second error, ending the game with a final 2-1 mark in favor of the Tar Heels.

Spingola pitched the final three innings, giving up only one hit with four strikeouts. Ashley Bone pitched four, recording one strikeout while giving up seven hits and one walk.
