Golfers Finish 11th At Bryan National

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - The University of North Carolina ninth-ranked women's golf team shot a 12-over-par 300 in the final round of the Bryan National Collegiate to place eleventh with a 33-over 897 total. Juniors Katherine Perry and Casey Grice shot an even-par 72 in the final round of play.

Perry, from Cary, N.C., began the day slow, bogeying four of her first nine holes. Perry recovered on the back nine, with birdies on four of her final five holes. She tied for 17th place with a 5-over 221 total. Grice, from College Station, Texas, had three birdies and three bogeys in the final round. Grice tied for 28th with a 7-over 223. Junior Jackie Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., finished the day with a 4-over 76 after double bogeying her first two holes. Chang also had a birdie and a bogey in the round. Chang's 8-over 224 total tied for 32nd individually. Maia Schechter, a sophomore from Takoma Park, Md., who played as an individual in this event, shot an 8-over 80 in the final round. Schechter tied for 50th individually with a 12-over 228. Freshman Elizabeth Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, also shot an 80 in the final round. Mallet double bogeyed her first hole and carded seven bogeys and one birdie in the remaining 17 holes. Mallett tied for 56th individually with a 13-over 229 three-day total. Courtney Gunter, a senior form Matthews, N.C., shot an 11-over 83 in the final round to finish 85th individually with a 244 total.

Virginia held onto the lead of the 17-team field, finishing with a 5-over 869 total. The Cavaliers shot a 7-over 295 in the final round. Arkansas placed second after firing a 2-over 290 to finish four strokes behind Virginia after three days. Wake Forest finished third after its best round, shooting a 1-over 289. Vanderbilt and Florida rounded out the top five, finishing one and two strokes behind Wake Forest's 21-over 885 total, respectively.

Emilie Burger of Georgia fired a 3-under 69 in the final round to grab the individual title with a 5-under 211 three-day total. Virginia's Brittany Altomare fell to second after shooting an even-par 72 to finish with a 4-under 212. Sarah Schmelzel of South Carolina placed third with a 1-under 215 total. Virginia's Elizabeth Brightwell and NC State's Brittany Marchand both finished with an even-par 216 to tie for fourth place.

The 54-hole event was played at the Bryan Park Champions Course, which features a par 72, 6,386-yard layout. This was the last tournament for the Tar Heels before the ACC Championships April 19.
