Release: 03/30/2013

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -  Senior Tom Luchsinger finished fifth in the 200-yard butterfly Saturday at the 2013 NCAA Swimming Championships to cap his brilliant career at Carolina.  He became the first Tar Heel to swim the event under 1:43 and earned first-team All-America honors with the highest NCAA finish of his career.

The Tar Heels finished in a tie for 29th place in the team standings with 15 points.

The senior from Mt. Sinai, N.Y., had placed eighth in the 400-yard individual medley as a sophomore for his highest previous finish in the national meet.  He was ninth in the 200 fly as a sophomore and 10th in the event as a junior.  Luchsinger lowered his own school record in the event in Saturday's final by going 1:42.95.  His previous school record was 1:43.15.  He missed the ACC record which has stood since 2003 by just .11 of a second.

Luchsinger qualified for the championship final by going a career best 1:43.06 in the preliminaries and earning the fifth seed.

"We concluded the 2013 NCAA Championships with a great fifth place finish by Tom Luchsinger, a senior, in his first time in the championship final of the 200 butterfly," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm.  "Tom's performance was excellent, going a best time in the prelims and another best time in the finals.  I am very proud of Tom for his two scoring swims this week."

"I am proud of our group as a whole," said DeSelm.  "We did not score as many points as the past few years and did not finish as high as a team.  But I am sure we gained a great deal of experience and I know our guys will utilize what they learned here to help themselves and their teammates be better in the future."

Senior Brett Nagle swam an excellent 1650-yard freestyle for the Tar Heels as he took 26th place in 15:03.85.  Nagle's time was just off his career best time of 15:02.52 in the event.

Other Tar Heels in action on Saturday included freshman Logan Heck, who finished 44th in the 100-yard freestyle in 44.33 seconds while freshman Ben Colley finished 37th in the 1:46.60.  Carolina's 400-yard freestyle relay team finished 26th in a time of 2:56.44.  The relay consisted of freshman Logan Heck (44.16), freshman Nic Graesser (44.34), junior J.T. Stilley (43.91) and junior Kyle Ficker (44.03).
