AWENDAW, S.C. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired a 4-over-par 292 in the final round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate to finish in sixth place with an 891 total. The Tar Heels were led by senior Michael McGowan on Tuesday as he fired an even par 72 at Bulls Bay Golf Club.
"I was really proud of how hard our guys fought this week in the adverse conditions," said Tar Heel head coach Andrew Sapp. "Our attitudes were what helped us play well. We got some great wins over some ranked teams which helps build momentum going into the rest of the spring. Andy and Michael did a great job leading the way with top-10 finishes."
McGowan, along with teammate Andy Sajevic tied for seventh place with a 3-over 219 total. McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., fired five birdies, one bogey and two double-bogeys for his even par 72 score. Sajevic, from Fremont, Neb., fired a 1-over 73 on Tuesday as his round included three birdies and four bogeys. Sophomore Bailey Patrick also carded a 1-over 73 in the final round, one that also included three birdies and four bogeys. The Charlotte, N.C., native tied for 33rd place with an 11-over 227 total. Keagan Cummings, a freshman from Dublin, Ireland, shot a 2-over 74 for a 10-over 226 total to tie for 30th place while sophomore Brandon Dalinka, from Newtown, Pa., posted an 80 to finish with a 238 total in a tie for 66th.
Duke topped the 15-team field as they finished at 10-over 874 after firing a 4-under 284 in the final round. NC State finished three strokes back in second place at 13-over 877. Wake Forest finished third with an 884 total while Missouri placed fourth at 888, LSU fifth at 889, Carolina sixth at 890 and Texas A&M seventh at 892. Rounding out the top 10 are Auburn in eighth place at 896, South Carolina ninth at 905 and Clemson and Kentucky tied for 10th at 908.
Logan Harrell of NC State fired a 6-under-par 66 in the final round to finish at 3-under 213 to capture the individual championship. Austin Cody of NC State finished one stroke back in second place at 2-under 214 after firing a 5-under 67 on Tuesday. Albin Choi of NC State and Mads Soegaard of Duke tied for third place at 1-under 215 while Kentucky's Stephen Powers and NC State's Mitch Sutton tied for fifth place at 2-over 218. There were seven players tied for seventh place at 3-over 219 - Carolina's McGowan and Sajevic, Wake Forest's Evan Beck, Virginia's Denny McCarthy, South Carolina's Matthew NeSmith, Texas A&M's Cameron Peck and LSU's Andrew Presley.
The 54-hole event was played at Bulls Bay Golf Club which features a par 72, 7,363-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action April 6-7 at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Kannapolis, N.C.
