Top-Ranked Virginia Downs Tar Heels 6-1
Release: 03/24/2013

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Top-ranked Virginia (13-0, 2-0 ACC) handed the #70 North Carolina men's tennis team (7-10, 0-4 ACC) a 6-1 loss on Sunday at Boar's Head Sports Club. The Tar Heels were not able to overcome a slow start despite two singles matches going to three sets.

After taking the doubles point, the Cavaliers won three consecutive singles matches at the #3, #5 and #6 singles positions to seal the victory.

Virginia's trio of nationally ranked doubles teams got the Cavaliers off to a fast start.

The 46th-ranked pairing of Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank defeated Brett Clark and William Parker, 8-1. The second-ranked duo of Jarmere Jenkins and Mac Styslinger then secured the doubles point for the Cavs, taking down Esben Hess-Olesen and Nelson Vick by a score of 8-4. The match at No. 3 doubles was halted as a result.

Virginia found similar success in singles play, with two players ranked in the Top 5 and all six of their players nationally ranked.

At the No. 3 seed, #1 Alex Domijan beat #113 Nelson Vick, 6-1, 6-1, to put Virginia up 2-0. No. 12 Marc Styslinger maintained the Cavs momentum, taking down #114 Oystein Steiro by a score of 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 position.

No. 70 Harrison Richmond sealed the match for Virginia by defeating Maik Ulrich at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

Senior William Parker tallied Carolina's only victory by gritting out a three-set match over #22 Ryan Shane at No. 4 singles by a count of 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Virginia went on to claim #1 and #2 singles, including another three-set match at No. 1 singles that saw #5 Jarmere Jenkins edge #35 Esben Hess-Olesen, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The Tar Heels will get a short break before traveling to Atlanta on Friday, April 5th, for a 2:30 p.m. match.
