Henderson Claims All-America Honors
Release: 03/22/2013

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Sophomore Evan Henderson became the 23rd All-America in North Carolina wrestling history on Friday as he claimed a pair of wins to become UNC's first All-America since 2005.

Henderson opened Friday night's fourth session with his second pin of the tournament when he was able to pin Northern Iowa's Joey Lazor in 1:52 to earn his first All-America honor.

Henderson then assured himself at least a sixth place finish as he bested Virginia Tech's Zach Neibert for the second consecutive week with a 7-4 decision. Henderson will return to action in Saturday's morning session against sixth-seeded Ugi Khishignyam of The Citadel who Henderson has claimed a pair of wins against this season.

The All-America honor is the first for a Tar Heel since Evan Sola claimed sixth place in the 2005 NCAA Championships.

Freshmen Nathan Kraisser and John Staudenmayer both fell just shy of All-America honors on Friday as Kraisser dropped a 19-7 major decision to #12 seed Tyler Cox of Wyoming and Staudenmayer fell to #11 seed Cody Yohn of Minnesota in a narrow 5-3 decision.

The Tar Heels have earned 21.5 team points through the first two days of the tournament and are in 22nd place. The 21.5 points equal the point total for Carolina in the last four NCAA Championships combined. The 22nd overall finish would go down as the best finish since the 1996 squad finished in 21st place.

Action resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. CT when the wrestleback semifinals and third through eighth place matches take place. ESPNU and ESPN3 will have all the action.
