CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina is the No. 8 seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament South Regional and will face No. 9 seed Villanova on Friday at 7:20 p.m. Eastern Time in Kansas City, Mo. The winner will play the winner of Friday's game between top-seeded Kanas (the second overall seed in the tournament) and No. 16 seed Western Kentucky, to be played following the UNC-Villanova contest.
"I am extremely happy for our team that it earned a selection to play in the NCAA Tournament," Carolina head coach Roy Williams said on Sunday evening. "Our players did exactly what I thought they would do- they worked hard and got better and better as the year progressed. Making the field is a reward for their continued improvement. We look forward to hopefully playing our best basketball this coming weekend.
"I am somewhat surprised and disappointed that only four ACC teams are in the field and that the league only received two #2's and two #8 seeds. I think the ACC deserved better than that."
Carolina is making its 44th NCAA Tournament appearance, second-most in history. The Tar Heels have played in 149 NCAA Tournament games and won 108, both of which totals are second in NCAA history. UNC's Tournament winning percentage of .725 (108-41) is third in history. Carolina has played in 18 Final Fours, more than any school in the nation.
Williams is making his 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance as a head coach, tied for seventh in NCAA history. He's coached in 81 NCAA Tournament games, posted 61 wins and posted an NCAA winning percentage of .753, all of which are third in NCAA history.
