Carolina Sweeps Series With 6-2 Win
Release: 03/10/2013

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 1 North Carolina improved to 3-0 in conference action and a perfect 14-0 on the year with a 6-2 win over Wake Forest (9-8, 0-3 ACC) Sunday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

In the conference opening series for both teams the Tar Heels jumped out to a 2-0 series advantage with wins on Friday and Saturday before falling behind early on Sunday.

The Demon Deacons struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning when Jack Carey tallied a two-run single against starter Hobbs Johnson.

Carolina would answer in its next at bat as Cody Stubbs opened the inning with a double the opposite way to left field.

Michael Russell would deliver a single into center field to plate Stubbs from second and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Freshman Skye Bolt would knot things up for the Tar Heels in the top of the fourth when he connected on his third home run of the weekend, a solo shot to left center.

The Tar Heels would knock out Wake Forest starter Justin Van Grouw in the fifth inning as they took advantage of a Demon Deacon miscue to plate the go-ahead run.

Mike Zolk opened the inning with a single up the middle and advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Matt Roberts. Wake Forest first baseman Matt Conway fielded the bunt but threw it away putting runners on the corners.

Chaz Frank then delivered a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Zolk and put UNC up 3-2.

The Tar Heel bullpen would go to work in the bottom half of the fifth as Chris McCue entered with a pair of runners on base and was able to escape trouble with a fly out and a ground ball double play to keep UNC in front.

McCue would follow with a scoreless sixth before the Tar Heel bats added two more runs in the seventh inning thanks to a RBI double by Colin Moran and a RBI single by Cody Stubbs.

Another scoreless frame from McCue in the seventh preceded a three-pitcher inning for the Tar Heels in the eighth.

McCue opened with a strikeout before allowing a single to Brett Armour. Tate Parrish would come on to face a left-handed batter but walked the man to put two on with just one out.

Sophomore Trevor Kelley would come on and get a line drive double play to Mike Zolk to get out of danger.

The Tar Heels would add another run in the ninth as Brian Holberton walked with the bases loaded before Kelley closed the door on his first career save.

McCue earned the win as he allowed three hits over 3.1 innings of work to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Up next for the Tar Heels is a visit from Gardner-Webb on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before they host High Point at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
