Carolina To Host 'Noles Sunday
Release: 03/03/2013
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina (20-8, 10-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) will try to stay tied for third place in the ACC when it hosts Florida State (15-13, 7-8 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Smith Center.

CBS will televise Sunday's game, and Marv Albert (play-by-play) and Steve Kerr (analyst) will have the call.

Carolina enters the weekend at 10-5 in ACC play, tied for third place in the conference with Virginia.  Miami enters the weekend in first place at 14-1 and Duke is second at 11-4.  NC State is fifth at 9-6, and Maryland and Florida State are both 7-8.

UNC has won four consecutive games and 10 of 13 since starting ACC play 0-2 in early January.  Carolina's four-game win streak includes victories over Virginia (Feb. 16 at home), Georgia Tech (Feb. 19 on the road), NC State (Feb. 23 at home) and Clemson (Feb. 28 on the road).

The Seminoles are coming off a 76-62 home win over Wake Forest on Tuesday night after previously having lost back-to-back road games at NC State and Virginia Tech.

Former Tar Heel and 1978 National Player of the Year Phil Ford (a 2013 inductee into the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame) and former Tar Heel coach Bill Guthridge will be honored at halftime.

20 WINS

Carolina is 20-8 this season and has posted the 55th 20-win season in its 103-year history.  The Tar Heels have won 20 games 40 times in the last 43 years (every season since 1970-71 except 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04).

This season marks Carolina's ninth 20-win season in a row under head coach Roy Williams, who was won at least 20 games in 23 of his 25 seasons as a head coach (and won 19 in the other two years).

Carolina won at least 20 games for an NCAA-record 31 consecutive seasons from 1970-71 to 2000-01.  In that span, the Tar Heels won at least 25 games 21 times and at least 30 games three times.

DOUBLE-DIGIT ACC WINS

Carolina beat Clemson on Thursday night to win its 10th ACC game of the season, earning their 37th 10-win ACC season and its eighth in the last nine years under head coach Roy Williams.

No other ACC school has as many 10-win ACC seasons as Carolina.  Duke is second with 31.

THE SERIES VS. THE SEMINOLES

Carolina leads the series with Florida State, 43-12, including a 33-11 advantage since the Seminoles joined the ACC prior to the 1991-92 season.

The Tar Heels have won 24 of the last 31 in the series, including 13 of the last 17 meetings.

Carolina leads the series 17-4 in Chapel Hill and and 14-4 in the Smith Center.  FSU beat UNC in Chapel Hill during the  1991-92, 1995-96, 1999-2000 and 2009-10 seasons.

Carolina has won eight of its last nine games against FSU in Chapel Hill.

Roy Williams is 13-5 vs. FSU as the UNC head coach.

EARLIER THIS SEASON IN TALLAHASSEE:  UNC 77, FSU 72 (JAN. 12)

P.J. Hairston scored a then career-high 23 points to lead Carolina to a 77-72 win at Florida State on Jan. 12, 2013, in the Tucker Center in Tallahassee.  Hairston set a career high for field goals, shooting 9 for 14 from the floor, and hit 4 of 9 three-point tries.  He also grabbed four rebounds in 28 minutes.

Jackson Simmons, celebrating his 20th birthday, scored a career-high eight points and grabbed four rebounds.  All four of Simmons' rebounds came off the offensive glass and led to eight Tar Heel second-chance points.

Carolina scored 19 second-chance points overall to FSU's 11.  The Tar Heels rebounded 19 of their 31 missed shots in the game.

Reggie Bullock had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Tar Heels while also tallying four assists (and just one turnover) and making two steals.

James Michael McAdoo finished with 14 points and eight rebounds in 35 minutes.

UNC ended the game on a 12-4 run in the final 5:42 of the game.

Carolina out-rebounded FSU by a 41-19 margin, including a 19-6 edge on the offensive boards. The +22 rebound margin for the Tar Heels was its biggest of the season to date, eclipsing a +20 mark against Florida Atlantic and McNeese State.

UNC's 19 offensive rebounds equalled FSU's 19 total boards.  The Seminoles' 19 rebounds were the fewest by a Carolina opponent through 16 games this season.

Florida State hit 11 of 22 three-point attempts in the game but none in the last 11:57 of the game.  The Seminoles, who hit 12 three-pointers in a 2012 win over UNC in the Tucker Center, have hit a combined 23 shots from behind the arc in the last two Carolina appearances in Tallahassee.

The Tar Heels connected on 8 of 20 three-point attempts as a team, led by Hairston's four.  Bullock also hit two from long range, as did Marcus Paige.

Carolina shot 53.3 percent from the floor in the second half and 48.3 percent for the game.

The victory was UNC's first ACC win of the season and allowed the Tar Heels to avoid just the second 0-3 ACC start in school history (1996-97).
