TEMPE, Ariz. - Carolina split games with North Dakota and No. 3 Arizona State Saturday on day two of the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational.
Highlighting game one was Jordan Scarboro's two three-run triples and Constance Orr's grand slam as the Tar Heels shutout North Dakota 16-0. UNC threated host ASU in game two, as the Sun Devils trailed for the first time this season before the fourth when the Tar Heels took a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Kristen Brown in the second. Jenna Kelly also had a two-run home run in game two.
Carolina took an early lead over North Dakota and never let up, putting four runs on the board in the first. Erin Satterfield drew a walk and advanced to second on a single to right by Haleigh Dickey. Satterfield and Dickey advanced to second and third before Amber Parrish drew a walk. With bases loaded, Constance Orr smashed her fifth homer out to center to put the Tar Heels up 4-0.
After a scoreless second, UNC had a big inning in the third. Dickey was hit by the pitch, and Aquilla Mateen stole second pinch running for Dickey. Elena Covert singled, which advanced Mateen to third. Orr then was hit, which loaded the bases for Kristen Brown, who was also hit, forcing Mateen home. With bases loaded again, Kati Causey drew a walk to add another run, before Jenna Kelly was also hit, adding a third run. Jordan Scarboro tripled to left center, clearing the loaded bases to make it 10-0, Carolina.
In the fourth, Megan Morrison grabbed her second homer of the weekend with a shot over the left field line as the Tar Heels increased their lead to 11-0. Scarboro hit another triple, this time to right center to drive in all Tar Heel runners before Paige Williams singled to right to drive in Scarboro, making it 15-0.
Orr singled in the fifth and scored on Brown's double to right field for the final run in the Tar Heels' 16-0 shutout.
The Sun Devils trailed for the first time this season prior to the fourth, but they didn't give up the lead for long. In the third, Amber Freeman homered to left center for the Sun Devils' first run. Haley Steele drew a walk and advanced to second on a single to right by Elizabeth Caporuscio. Nikki Girard singled to center to drive in Steele before Lucy Aubrecht drew a walk to load the bases. Sam Parlich doubled to right center, which drove in Girard and Caporuscio and put the Sun Devils on top, 4-2.
In the bottom half of the fourth, Bailey Wigness singled and advanced to third on a Tar Heel error. Alix Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to left, which drove in Wigness to give ASU the lead back at 5-4.
Parlich homered over left field in the sixth, padding the Sun Devils' lead at 6-4. Johnson reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a walk to Cheyenne Coyle. Steele then doubled to center, which drove in Johnson for another ASU run.
Lori Spingola pitched six innings, giving up 10 hits and striking out one.
Carolina, now 14-6 on the season, closes out play at the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational Sunday with a 11:30 am (ET) game against Binghamton. The Tar Heels return home next week, hosting USC Upstate on Wednesday at 4 pm before their ACC-opening series with Boston College next weekend.
