The North Carolina men's soccer team and the Columbus Crew honored one of their own Sunday with the inaugural Kirk Urso Memorial Match in Greensboro, N.C.
The Crew claimed the lone goal of the match when Konrad Warzycha tallied in the 79th minute to lead Columbus to the 1-0 win over the Tar Heels.
Over 2,000 fans showed their support for the former Tar Heel and Crew midfielder on Sunday as all proceeds from the match went to the Kirk Urso Memorial Fund.
On the pitch Sunday for the Crew was former Tar Heel and 2011 Most Valuable Player Ben Speas.
"For me personally, it's awesome," Speas said. "I think it just shows the lives that he touched. For our Crew teammates, it's good. We still think about him daily. It's still tough, but I think this is a good event."
The Tar Heels opened their spring schedule earlier than normal to take part in the memorable match and will return to action on March 23 against the Carolina RailHawks in Cary, N.C.
