Golfers Tied For 2nd At UCF Challenge

SORRENTO, FLA. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team is tied for second place after the first round of the UCF Challenge.  The eighth-ranked Tar Heels fired a 1-under-par 287 on Sunday and stand three strokes behind leader South Carolina in a tie with host UCF and Augusta State.  Carolina's Jackie Chang and Courtney Gunter both fired a 1-under-par 71 to lead the Tar Heels.

"We're excited to start the spring season playing a very nice golf course," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann.  "Overall, I think we played solid golf.  It's a very scorable golf course and I hope we'll have a good day tomorrow."

Chang, a junior from Paradise Valley, Ariz., carded three birdies and two bogies for her 1-under score and is tied for 13th place with Gunter.  Gunter, a senior from Matthews, N.C., carded three birdies and one double bogey.  Junior Casey Grice, from College Station, Texas, fired an even par 72 and is tied for 23rd place after a round that featured two birdies and two bogeys.  Freshman Elizabeth Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, carded a 1-over-par 73 and stands tied for 28th place.  Junior Katherine Perry, from Cary, N.C., shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 59th place along with sophomore Maia Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., who is competing as an individual.

South Carolina leads the field of 18 teams after firing a 4-under-par 284 in Sunday's first round.  Carolina, UCF and Augusta State are all deadlocked in second with a 1-under 287 total.  Tulane is in fifth place at even par 288 while East Carolina is sixth at 289, Kennesaw State is seventh at 292 and Miami and Texas State are tied for eighth place at 5-over 293.

Two Augusta State players are tied for the individual lead after both fired a 5-under-par 67 in the first round.  Justine Dreher of South Carolina is one stroke back in third place at 4-under 68 while four players are tied for fourth at 3-under 69 - Virginia's Lauren Coughlin, UCF's Robyn Doig, Kennesaw State's Ines Lescudier and Miami's Leticia Ras-Anderica.

The 54-hole event continues through Tuesday at RedTail Golf Club which features a par 72, 6,374-yard layout.  The Tar Heels begin teeing off at 10 a.m. in Monday's second round. Live scoring is available on
