CHAPEL HILL -- With preseason practice well underway and the season opener against Florida looming on February 9, the North Carolina women's lacrosse program took top-five rankings in a pair of national preseason polls this week.
The Tar Heels took the No. 5 spot in the 2013 preseason Inside Lacrosse/deBeer Media poll on Monday. Syracuse was No. 1, followed by No. 2 Northwestern (the defending NCAA champion), No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Maryland and No. 5 Carolina.
Lacrosse Magazine also picked the Tar Heels fifth in the nation in its preseason poll. The publcation provided an extensive breakdown of the 2013 Carolina squad that includes scouting reports from opposing coaches, including one who said of Carolina, "That's a team that I expect big things out of. They're going to be amazing this year."
UNC and Duke will co-host the annual exhibtion South of the Border Tournament this weekend. The Tar Heels' regular season opener is Saturday Febuary 9 against Florida.
