CHAPEL HILL - It was another big week in Carolina athletics, and to be sure you didn't miss any of the news and action, check in with this week's installment of the GoHeels Weekly Primer.

 

BASEBALL:  Carolina opened preseason practice as the top-ranked team in the nation in the Baseball America poll ... Perfect Game's preseason poll also tabbed the Tar Heels No. 1 ... The NCBWA picked UNC No. 4 in its preseason poll ... The ACC's coaches picked the Tar Heels to win the ACC's Coastal Division ...  UP NEXT:  The annual First Pitch Dinner is Saturday night.

MEN'S BASKETBALL:  Adam Lucas profiled the progress of freshman point guard Marcus Paige ... On Wednesday night Carolina beat Georgia Tech 79-63 ... After the game, Lucas wrote about former Tar Heel great Rashad McCants' return to the Smith Center ... GoHeels TV put together the latest installment of its excellent This Week in Carolina Basketball video segment after the wins over Georgia Tech and Maryland ... Megan Walsh took a look at P.J. Hairston's solid game against the Yellow Jackets and his drive for consistency as a sophomore ... Lucas broke down the Tar Heel frontcourt ... Aaron Beard of the Associated Press put together this story on James Michael McAdoo's adjustment to being a mainstay after playing a supporting role last year ... On Saturday, Carolina visited NC State and lost, falling behind by 28 points and pulling back within five before losing 91-83 ... Here's Lucas' take on the loss ...   UP NEXT:  The Tar Heels will visit Boston College on Tuesday night on ESPNU and then host Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon in the Smith Center on the ACC Network.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL:  The Tar Heels came up short in a road game at Maryland on Thursday night ... On Sunday, the road swing continued at Miami with a buzzer-beating win over the Hurricanes ... UP NEXT:  Carolina will host Florida State on Thursday night and Duke on Sunday afternoon.

FENCING:  The men's team went 2-4 on Sunday at the NYU Invitational ... UP NEXT:  The Northwestern Duals next weekend in Evanston, Ill.

FOOTBALL:  The 2013 Spring Game will be held on April 13 ... UP NEXT:  Signing Day is Feb. 6, and a full slate of events is on tap.

GYMNASTICS:  On Saturday night, Carolina traveled north and lost at Maryland in College Park, Md.  ... UP NEXT:  The Terrapins will visit Chapel Hill for a rematch on Saturday evening in a meet to be seen on GoHeels TV live from Carmichael.

MEN'S SOCCER:  The Kirk Urso Memorial Match will be held Feb. 24.

WOMEN'S SOCCER:  Summer Green and Hanna Gardner were named to the U.S. U20 Team ... Six current & former Tar Heels earned calls to the camp for the National Team ... Longtime assistant coach Bill Palladino was named the winner of the Glenn "Mooch" Myernick Award as the National Women's Assistant Coach of the Year

SOFTBALL:  The Tar Heels grabbed the No. 22 spot in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll ... UP NEXT:  Carolina opens the 2013 season at the Tiger Classic Challenge in Baton Rouge, La., on Feb. 8-10.

MEN'S TENNIS: Carolina hit the road to Urbana, Ill., over the weekend for the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend ... On Friday, the Tar Heels came from behind to beat Tulsa 4-3 ... On Saturday, Tennessee topped Carolina in the Kick-Off final ... UP NEXT:  Carolina will host future ACC foe Louisville on Saturday evening.

WOMEN'S TENNIS:  Carolina hosted VCU, DePaul and Auburn on Saturday and Sunday for the 2013 ITA Kick-Off Weekend, and the Tar Heels went 2-0 ... On Saturday, UNC beat Auburn ... On Sunday, Carolina swept VCU ...  UP NEXT:  The Tar Heels will host Michigan on Sunday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

TRACK & FIELD: The distance events shined on the first day of the Hokie Invitational on Friday ... On Saturday, UNC closed out action with two wins and six top-three finishes ... UP NEXT:  The New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City, the JDL Invitational Mile in Winston-Salem, N.C., and the Gene Anderson Invitational in Chapel Hill, all next weekend.

WRESTLING:  Carolina dropped a 27-6 decision at Navy on Friday evening ... The next day against ACC foe Maryland, the Tar Heels fell, 21-16 ... UP NEXT:  Carolina will host rival NC State on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Carmichael Arena.
