CHAPEL HILL --- The No. 8 North Carolina women's tennis team opens the 2013 dual match season Wednesday against local foes UNC Greensboro and Elon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Carolina hosts the Spartans at 2 p.m. with the match against the Phoenix to follow at 7. Admission is free for all fans and both matches will be played indoors.
UNC boasts a nation-best seven ranked singles players and two ranked doubles pairs entering the 2013 campaign. Senior Gina Suarez-Malaguti, who advanced to the final of last weekend's Freeman Memorial Championships in Las Vegas, leads the way at No. 11, while the freshman tandem of Ashley Dai and Whitney Kay starts the spring ranked No. 8 in the doubles poll.
Carolina faces a short turnaround this week as the Tar Heels host the 2013 ITA Kick-Off Weekend Saturday and Sunday. UNC will face Auburn on Saturday at 1 p.m. in hopes of advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championships in February. The winner of the UNC-Auburn match will face the VCU-DePaul winner for a spot in Charlottesville, Va., Feb. 8-11.
