Release: 01/18/2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina dropped its first ACC dual of the season Friday night as No. 19 Virginia downed the Tar Heels, 24-9 at Carmichael Arena.

Freshman Nathan Kraisser (125) opened the dual with an upset win as Kraisser knocked off Matt Snyder of Virginia. Snyder entered the dual ranked No. 7 in the country but the No. 13 Kraisser was able to claim an 8-5 decision.

Kraisser jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first period thanks to a takedown and a three-point near fall before Snyder executed a reversal. A scoreless second period preceded another Kraisser takedown as the freshman held off Snyder and won 8-5.

The Cavaliers evened the dual at 3-3 when No. 13 George DiCamillo (133) posted a 9-3 decision over No. 18 Joey Ward. DiCamillo held a 3-2 lead after the first before tallying an escape and a takedown in the second period and another in the third.

No. 7 Evan Henderson (141) held Virginia's Jimmy Nehls to a single point on an escape in the first period en route to a 6-1 decision. Henderson led 4-1 after the first before adding single points in the second and third.

Virginia would even things once again at 149 as No. 20 Derek Valenti claimed a 6-2 decision over Nick Heilmann to make the score 6-6. The opening two periods were scoreless before Valenti managed an escape and a takedown to take control in the third.

Virginia's Jedd Moore entered the weekend No. 16 in the country at 157 pounds and lived up to his ranking as he downed freshman Jake Crawford, 15-3 to post a major decision. Moore held a 4-1 lead after the first and never looked back as he tallied a takedown in the second, two in the third to go along with a two-point near fall.

The major decision gave Virginia a 10-6 advantage heading into the intermission.

Redshirt freshman John Staudenmayer battled Virginia's Nick Sulzer who entered the weekend ranked No. 7 in the nation at 165 pounds. Sulzer managed a pair of takedowns in the first as he jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one. Staudenmayer tallied another escape in the second and was within two points late in the third after a stalling penalty on Sulzer. The Cavalier sophomore was able to avoid a take down to claim the 5-3 win.

UNC redshirt sophomore Tanner Eitel pulled off the upset of the night as he took down No. 14 Jon Fausey, 12-10. Eitel fell behind after the first period as Fausey claimed a takedown before Eitel escaped.

Fausey added three more points in the second with an escape and a takedown as he led Eitel, 5-1 after two periods. Then the fireworks started as Eitel registered a quick escape and takedown to pull within one at 5-4.

Fausey was able to escape from Eitel but the Tar Heel caught Fausey off guard and picked up a takedwon and a three-point near fall to take a 9-6 lead. A reversal by Fausey pulled the match within one at 9-8 but Eitel tallied another escape and takedown en route to the 12-10 decision.

Eitel's win cut the Tar Heel team deficit to four points at 13-9 but the Cavaliers were able to capture the final three bouts to take the dual, 24-9.

Stephen Doty claimed a 9-4 decision over UNC's Alex Utley at 184 pounds with a takedown in each period. Utley managed a takedown of his own in the third but it was too late as Doty helped bump Virginia's lead to 16-9.

Virginia's Zach Nye sealed the match for Virginia with a 15-0 technical fall over UNC's Frank Abbondanza at 197 pounds. Nye held a five-point lead after the first period before registering a reversal and three near falls in the second to end the match at 4:59.

Freshman Cody Klempay battled Virginia's Derek Papagianopoulos at heavyweight and trailed by a single point late in the bout. Papagianopoulos picked up a takedown in the first before Klempay was able to escape. Klempay escaped in the second period as well before Papagianopoulos escaped to open the third.

With the bout at 3-2 in favor of Virginia, Klempay attempted to attack but Papagianopoulos was able to get a takedown to secure the bout.

Carolina will be right back in action on Saturday when the Tar Heels welcome in No. 11 Virginia Tech at 2:30 p.m.
