ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - University of North Carolina golfer Michael McGowan tied for sixth place at the 87th annual New Year's Invitational played at St. Petersburg Country Club. McGowan, a senior from Southern Pines, N.C., fired a 3-under-par in the final round to finish with a 4-under 284 total. After carding a 2-over 74 in the opening round, McGowan played under-par the rest of the way, firing a 2-under 70 and 1-under 71 in the second and third rounds before his 3-under 69 in the final round.
Another Tar Heel, Patrick Barrett, also posted a strong final round firing a 2-under 70 on Sunday. The senior from Pinehurst, N.C., fired earlier rounds of 78-82-74 and tied for 69th place with a 304 total. Toni Hakula, a junior at Texas, won the 72-hole event with a 12-under 276 total.
McGowan carded two top-10 finishes for the Tar Heels last fall. He placed third at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate and tied for eighth at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. Patrick also carded two top-10 finishes. He was the runner-up at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, competing as an individual, and tied for fourth place at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
Carolina captured the team title at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate and was the runner-up at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate and the Rod Myers Invitational. The Tar Heels began their spring season Feb. 17-19 at the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R.
