Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper has officially been named a first-team consensus All-America. To be selected a player has to be named first team on at least two of the five selected All-American teams. Cooper was one of 12 unanimous choices.
As a result, Cooper's name and jersey number will be honored inside Kenan Stadium. He becomes the 27th player to be honored in this fashion. The men honored at Kenan Stadium include five who have already had their jersey numbers retired, Carolina's consensus first-team All-Americas and any athlete who was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year. In 2003, five first-team Associated Press All-Americas and two players who were among the ACC's greatest 50 football players were added.
North Carolina's honored jersey's include #99 George Barclay, #59 Andy Bershak, #46 Bill Sutherland, #22 Charlie Justice, #50 Art Weiner, #10 Danny Talbott, #23 Don McCauley, #62 Ron Rusnak, #68 Ken Huff, #44 Mike Voight, #71 Dee Hardison, #98 Lawrence Taylor, #95 William Fuller, #12 Ethan Horton, #71 Marcus Jones, #87 Greg Ellis, #41 Brian Simmons, #31 Dre' Bly, #49 Julius Peppers, #44 Kelvin Bryant, #67 Harris Barton, #60 Brian Blados, #25 Irv Holdash, #85 Bob Lacey, #20 Amos Lawrence and #87 Paul Severin. Cooper's #64 will be added in the offseason.
Five organizations were used to compile the 2012 consensus team - American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, The Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation.
There were 12 players that were unanimous choices by all five organizations and one, Zach Ertz, who was named on four teams while the fifth (the Football Writers Association of America) did not name a tight end. Note: Each of the five teams has a different way of listing the returner or all-purpose player. For the purpose of the Consensus All-America team those categories were treated as one position.
The following players were listed on the most first team All-America teams competing against players at that position only.
