Tar Heels Move Into InterMat Top 25
Release: 12/12/2012

On the back of four top 20 wrestlers, including No. 6 Evan Henderson, the North Carolina wrestling squad entered the Top 25 this week for the first time since Nov. 7, 2003.

Sophomore Evan Henderson (141) entered the top 10 for the first time this season a week ago and moved up to No. 6 this week. Henderson becomes the highest-ranked Tar Heel since Thomas Scotton was ranked No. 6 on Jan. 19, 2010.

Henderson owns a 16-2 record this season with wins over No. 6 Undrakhbayar Khishignyam of The Citadel and No. 18 Nathan Pennesi of West Virginia. Henderson is also ranked among the top 10 by WIN (7) and Wrestling Report (8).

Freshman Nathan Kraisser (125) is nearing the top 10 as he checks in at No. 12 this week in the InterMat rankings. Kraisser is 15-2 on the year with a win over No. 9 Nick Soto of Chattanooga and his only setbacks are against the No. 2 and No. 6 wrestlers in the country.

Fellow freshman Joey Ward (133) is ranked No. 18 this week by InterMat as he holds a 14-5 record in his first year. Ward is also among the top 20 in the WIN (18) and Wrestling Report (17) rankings.

Sophomore Alex Utley remained in the top 20 this week with a No. 19 ranking by InterMat. Utley owns a 14-5 record this season at 184.

Other Tar Heels in the Wrestling Report rankings include: Antonio Giorgio (197) at No. 25, John Staudenmayer (165) at No. 31 and Christian Barber (149) at No. 32.

The Tar Heels return to action Dec. 29 when they head to Evanston, Ill. for the prestigious Midlands Championships.
