Chapel Hill -- After experiencing their first loss of the season a week earlier, the junior varsity Tar Heels came out with intensity against Pfeiffer University's JV squad on Saturday, winning 102-76 in the Smith Center.
Head coach C.B. McGrath felt that the team played with a lot of energy and unselfishly. He reminded the Tar Heels that this was the last game of the semester, so they needed to head into next semester on a good note and was pleased with their performance overall today.
Junior Learie Jones took a leadership role, scoring 18 points with 15 rebounds by the end of the first half. He was 13-for-19 in field goals. Although he fouled out in the second half, Learie ended the game with 26 points overall.
"Last week I lacked energy. I tried to bring energy to the game today and once someone has energy, it radiates to everyone," Learie said.
Teammate Jamian Newton, a junior, agreed with Learie. He said that having lots of energy will result in having a lot of fun on the court, for an overall better game. Jamian was another key player, with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
With the end of exams and winter break ahead of them, both Learie and Jamian agreed that the team needs to work on staying in shape and shooting over the long break from the court.
The Tar Heels go up against Methodist University on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 4 p.m. in the Smith Center.
