Roy Williams Postgame Quotes

UNC vs. East Tennessee State

Opening Statement:

"It was an unusual game to say the least - 41-12 at halftime. We had a couple of stretches in there where we kept stealing the ball. They had trouble running their offense. You feel bad for [East Tennessee State Head Coach] Murry [Bartow]  - he's got his point guard out, he had two guys that they suspended, and another guy that is out for a semester that will get back after that. So, things are looking up for their team, but it was tough for them in the first half. Then, I don't like to say this, but we couldn't maintain that same type of intensity in the second half. I wish we could have, but we didn't. We missed so many shots, and the strange thing is, we didn't practice very much this week, but we spent a lot of time shooting. Maybe we spent too much time shooting. We missed some easy ones, missed some layups, but at the same time defensively I thought we had a stretch in the first half where we were really good."

On the team's 30 assists on 31 field goals:

"Well, if you think about it, the only one [field goal] that wasn't [assisted] was when P.J. [Hairston] made a pass to Leslie [McDonald] and Leslie missed the layup but got his own rebound and put it back in. It shows that when we move the ball we are very successful. Most of the time if you have 30 assists you are going to score 110, 120 points, but we didn't do a very good job of all those other times."

Murray Bartow Postgame Quotes

On outscoring UNC in the second half:

"We're trying to win our league. North Carolina's not going to be in our league. You just got to try to take them. Any small victory you can take away from this, you've got to try to take away. So that was to me the encouraging thing. We could have totally caved in and quit. I thought the guys had a lot of fight in the second half. They made plays, competed hard, which is encouraging, but obviously the first half was not very good."

On North Carolina's defense:

"They're really good defensively. They're really good defensively. Their numbers, you look at field goal percentage defense, you look at steals, you look at force turnovers over their first eight games. They're really, really good. You combine that with our team, where we struggle offensively. It's not a real good combination. Plus, we don't have a point guard, so they started trapping us in the half court. We panicked a lot, and obviously they turned those into points at the other end."

On turning the ball over:

"We were really concerned coming in about how we'd deal with their pressure, and obviously it forced us into 22 turnovers.  You turn it over 22 times, that leads to transition points at the other end. It's another very good North Carolina team.

UNC Player Quotes

Reggie Bullock

On the team having 30 assists:

"I believe we're a very unselfish team.  We try to share the ball to the best of our ability.   We always try to find the open shooters and get the ball inside to the big man to finish strong.  I think we did well sharing the ball and getting people open shots.  In the second half we didn't shoot well from the 3-point line.  We had a lot of open shots but they weren't going in."

On the different lineups Coach Williams has started:

"Whoever coach wants to throw in there.  Today Joel (James) started for us.  He played well; he's a big body down low.  He's very unselfish, but one thing we need him to do is--when he gets the ball down low, he doesn't know how strong he is-he needs to just turn and go up and score the bucket.  Any lineup can come in, I believe Brice (Johnson) played very well for us tonight and J.P. (Tokoto) gave us some great minutes coming off the bench.  Whoever Coach (Williams) throws in, they do well for us."

On Carolina's fast start:

"We were just knocking down shots, sharing the ball, finding the open teammate, and playing Carolina basketball.  Finding open shooters and being able to knock them down early in the first half."
