Cooper Named Walter Camp All-America
Release: 12/06/2012

Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina senior offensive guard Jonathan Cooper has been named a Walter Camp first-team All-America, adding to his collection of postseason honors.  The nation's oldest All-America team was announced Thursday evening on The Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Show.

A native of Wilmington, N.C., Cooper is considered by many observers as the nation's top guard.  He graded out at 90 percent for the season and had double digits in knockdown blocks in nine of the Tar Heels' 12 games.  He was a key part of Carolina's offensive success.  The Tar Heels set single-season records in scoring, total offense and passing yards.  Running behind Cooper and left tackle James Hurst, UNC tailback Giovani Bernard ran for 1,228 yards.

The Walter Camp team is the third All-America team for Cooper, the Tar Heels' top-rated offensive lineman.  Cooper also earned first-team honors by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Football Writers' Association of America (FWAA).  He was one of three finalists for the Outland Trophy, which goes to the nation's top interior lineman.   He is the first Tar Heel to earn Walter Camp All-America honors since defensive back Trimane Goddard was a second-team selection in 2008.

The Walter Camp All-America team is selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the 124 Football Bowl Subdivision schools and certified by Marcum LLP, a New Haven-based accounting firm.
