Menís Golf Team Inks Three Recruits
Release: 11/20/2012

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina men's golf coach Andrew Sapp announced the signing of  three players that will join the Tar Heels for the 2013-14 season. - Davis Bateman of Charlotte, N.C., Henry Do of Canton, Mich., and Zachary Martin of Pinehurst, N.C.

"We are very fortunate to sign three excellent players who will add a lot to our team over the next four years," says Sapp.  "We will be losing three key seniors to graduation so we will look to these freshmen to jump right in and battle for spots in the starting lineup.  Having watched all three of these players a lot during their junior careers, I know they are not only quality golfers, but wonderful young men who will represent Carolina well."

Bateman, who played for Providence Day School, was a three-time NCISAA (North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association) All-State performer, 2010, 2011, 2012.  He was the 2011 NCISAA 3A State Champion and was the runner-up in 2012.  Bateman, who ranks 36th in Golfweek's Class of 2013, won the 2012 Joe Cheves Junior Championship.  He was the runner-up at the 2012 Carolinas/Georgia Junior Championship and placed third at the 2011 USGA Junior Qualifier, thus qualifying him to participate in the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur.  Bateman finished sixth at the 2012 AJGA Junior at River Landing and the 2011 Ballantyne Junior Open.  He tied for ninth at the 2012 Dogwood State Junior and the 2011 Mid Pines Invitational.

"Davis is a Tar Heel through and through and has continued to get better throughout his golf career," says Tar Heel head coach Sapp.  "He had a big win late this summer at the Joe Cheves and has proven that he can take his game to the highest level of college golf.  He is one of the best players in our state and we are so pleased he is coming to Carolina."

Do, who played at Ann Arbor Greenhills School, won the 2011 Michigan Division 4 High School State Championship and was a 2011 Michigan High School Super Team Member.  He was selected an AJGA Second Team All-America and a 2011 AJGA Wyndham Cup East Team Member.  Do, ranked 45th in Golfweek's Class of 2013, was also the champion of the 2011 Michigan Junior Amateur and the 2010 and 2011 AJGA Randy Wise Junior Open.   He tied for second place at the 2011 AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions, tied for fourth at the 2011 AJGA Coca-Cola Junior Championship and tied for eighth at the 2012 AJGA Memorial Junior.

"I have been watching Henry play golf since he was 12," says Sapp.  "We are thrilled to have him join us at Carolina.  He has a great record and has competed against the best in the country and that is what we look for in a Tar Heel recruit.  He is a proven winner and will bring that attitude with him to Chapel Hill.  I look forward to seeing how much he can improve when he is able to play golf twelve months out of the year."

Zachary Martin, who played at Pinecrest High School, is a 2012 AJGA HP Scholastic All-America who is ranked 57th in Golfweek's Class of 2013.  He was champion of the 2012 UGT The Winter Shootout at Eagle's Point.  Martin finished seventh at the NCHSAA 4A State Championship and the 2012 Jimmy Anderson Junior Invitational.  He placed eighth at the 2012 AJGA E-Z-GO Vaughn Taylor Championship, placed ninth at the 2012 AJGA Webb Simpson Junior Championship and finished 10th at the 2012 TYGA State Championship.

"Zachary has shown that he can shoot some very low scores," says Sapp.  "His final round stroke average in tournaments this year is wonderful including a 65 and a 66 in two AJGA events.  As he continues to grow in his golf, that ability to go low will contribute to him winning college tournaments.  He has a lot of talent and we are excited that he will be a Tar Heel."
