CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina senior Pete Mangum has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Football team for the third year in a row. The squad honors student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically and is selected by members of CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Mangum, a defensive back from Raleigh, is majoring in biomedical engineering (applied science) with a minor in physics. A special teams starter in every game this season, he has 19 tackles, two for losses, and a blocked kick. Twice this season he has been named the Tar Heels' Special Teams Player of the Week.
Carolina's Special Teams MVP in 2010, Mangum earned a scholarship in 2011 after playing two years as a walk-on. In addition to maintaining outstanding grades (the award requires a minimum 3.3 GPA), he is active in community outreach.
Mangum is a graduate of Leesville Road High School, where he was football MVP and team captain as well as a four-year member of the honor roll. He has been named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll in each year at UNC.
