CHAPEL HILL -- James Michael McAdoo had 16 points and eight rebounds to help No. 11 North Carolina beat Shaw 81-54 on Friday night in its only preseason game.
Freshman forward Joel James added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Tar Heels, who missed 10 of their first 11 3-point attempts and trailed early in the second half before rallying to score 23 consecutive points.
"I thought it was a really good night for us," head coach Roy Williams said. "I even liked it when they took the lead there because those are the kinds of things that we're going to face all year, so I liked the way our guys responded. We didn't shoot the ball very well. I said that last year we were going to be a really good shooting team, and I think this is a team that's going to be even better than that."Karron Johnson had 17 points to lead the Bears, a member of the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
UNC’s starting wing players shot a combined 6 for 19, but Leslie McDonald had 12 points off the bench, and P.J. Hairston scored eight straight points – including a pair of 3-pointers – to start the team’s second-half surge.
