CARY, N.C. - The North Carolina men's tennis has had an excellent first two days at the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolinas Regional with four UNC players advancing to the Round of 16 in singles.
Senior William Parker, sophomore Esben Hess-Olesen and freshman Brett Clark all scored third round wins over opponents from Duke on Friday to join junior Nelson Vick in the Round of 16. UNC was one of only two schools (out of a field of 25) to advance four players to the fourth round of play.
Both Parker and Clark upset seeded Duke players in the third round. Parker defeated No 7 seed Jason Tahir 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 while Clark beat #6 seed Raphael Hemmeler of Duke 7-6, 6-2. Esben Hess-Olesen, the #9 seed, has gone 3-0 on the first two days, beating Josh Levine of Duke in the third round and defeating eight-seeded Andrew Mellow of Furman 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth round. Hess-Olesen is alive for the tar Heels in Saturday's quarterfinals.
Nelson Vick won tough matches in the second and third rounds before the #7 seeded junior from UNC lost a though three-setter to Michael Redlicki of Duke in the fourth round 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.
