Tar Heels Sweep Hokies, 3-0
Release: 10/14/2012

BLACKSBURG, Va. - North Carolina swept the Hokies 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-14) Sunday afternoon, winning its first match at Virginia Tech since a 3-0 victory in 2008. Sophomore Lauren Adkins finished the match with 15 kills and five digs, and sophomore Cameron Van Noy had 11 kills and three blocks to lead the Tar Heels, who hit .336 as a team.

"This was the way we were playing at home, but to take this type of intensity and focus, and play together on the road, was fantastic," head coach Joe Sagula said. "This is the best match we've had in two weeks. It was great to be able to beat a really good Virginia Tech team, a really strong offensive team."

"I think what we did really well today was play strong defensively. Our focus today was to have a really good team effort, and we did that. We had different people step up in different positions, and it's exciting to see how well we did with switching a few people around today. It's not just about getting wins and scoring points-today we can leave here feeling really good about how we played today. We're almost at the halfway point, and we feel that we've made some really good strides so far," Sagula said.

Van Noy led the Tar Heel through set one, tallying five kills and a block for the 25-22 UNC win. Adkins, senior Emily McGee and sophomore Ece Taner each added three digs, and senior Cora Harms had nine assists and added two digs. The Hokies' Kathryn Caine had six kills, and Jennifer Wiker had three blocks for Virginia Tech.

The Tar Heels took set two in the same score, 25-22, hitting a strong .457 through the frame. Adkins had six kills and two digs, while Van Noy added four kills, Taner recorded four digs, and Harms had another nine assists. Wiker tallied six kills for the Hokies, who hit .382 in the second frame.

UNC closed the match with a decisive 25-14 set three win. Adkins had five kills as the Tar Heels hit .387 in the final frame, as the Hokies' attack was limited to .176. Taner had eight digs, and McGee had two aces and three digs for Carolina.

The Tar Heels, now 15-4 (6-3), return to Chapel Hill next weekend, hosting Maryland on Friday and Boston College on Saturday. The match against Boston College will be Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Carmichael Arena. Stay tuned to GoHeels.com for more information.
