UNC Eight Takes First At Occoquan
Release: 10/15/2012

North Carolina won the women's eight and put three of its fours in the top seven Sunday at the Occoquan Chase in the team's first racing of the fall. UNC was first and ninth in the 17-boat field for the Open Women's 8+, and then took fourth, fifth, seventh and 19th in the Open Women's 4+, which included 25 boats.

"We're very pleased to come in first in the eights," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "That goes to show our depth this year, that we were able to earn that result this early in the season.

"And our fours are another good indication of our depth. Our first two fours were only a couple of seconds apart, which I think was why our eight was so successful. To have two fours within two seconds of each other and three that close together is pretty strong, and we had our fourth four beating or competing with other teams' third or even second fours. We felt good about what the fours accomplished today."

Racing in the winning eight were coxswain Allie Davis, Jasmine Dennis, Caroline Campbell, Morgan Koder, Tianna Williams, Lindsay Newman, Emily Leidolf, Maria Santoyo and Claire Wardius.

In UNC's top four (fourth overall) were Carie Mastriani (coxswain), Dennis, Campbell, Santoyo and Leidolf. Carolina's second four (fifth overall) was coxswain Elizabeth Ayers, Koder, Williams, Newman and Wardius.

"This early in the season you go into a race with a lot of curiosity, to get a check and see where you are," Haney said. "I feel good about our results. We feel like we've accomplished a lot but we definitely have a lot of work to do and see a ton of potential in the team. We've had some key injuries and our depth will get even better once those athletes are back.

"It's a very good start for the fall, capitalizing on the depth we have. We've seen that in practice but it was really nice to see it coming together on race day."
