Postgame Notes • Sept. 22, 2012
North Carolina 27, East Carolina 6

• Carolina outscored ECU 14-0 in the third quarter and has outscored opponents 52-0 in the third quarter this season.

• QB Bryn Renner set a school record by throwing for the most passing yards in consecutive games by going 27 of 43 for 321 yards. He threw for a career-high 363 yards a week ago at Louisville. The 684 passing yards in two straight games is the highest mark in school history. The previous record was 683 shared by T.J. Yates (2007 - vs. East Carolina and Virginia) and Darian Durant (2002 - vs. Arizona State and NC State).

• Renner also set the total yardage mark in back-to-back games with a total of 713 (373 vs. Louisville and 340 vs. ECU) - previous record was 712 by Ronald Curry vs. Marshall and Georgia Tech in 2000.

• The Tar Heels recorded seven sacks on the day after tallying six in the opening three games of the season. The seven sacks equal the top mark in the ACC this season after NC State posted seven vs. South Alabama.

• The seven sacks are Carolina's most since the second game of the 2000 season when the Tar Heels sacked Wake Forest 10 times in a 35-14 Carolina victory.

• Renner now has 37 career touchdown passes, third all-time at Carolina. His 14-yard strike to Giovani Bernard in the first quarter moved him ahead of Chris Keldorf (35, 1996-97) on the UNC list.

• Renner moved to within 77 yards of Mike Thomas (fifth, 4,368) on the UNC career passing yardage list. Renner now has 4,291 yards. His 330 career completions are good for fifth all-time at Carolina.

• TB Giovani Bernard returned to the field after missing the last two games and carried 18 times for 50 yards and a 4-yard touchdown. He also caught 6 passes for 52 yards and a 14-yard score.

• Bernard now has 19 career touchdowns, including 15 rushing scores.

• WR Sean Tapley scored his first career touchdown, a 62-yard catch-and-run in the third quarter.

• LB Kevin Reddick recorded his second sack of the season in the third quarter. The New Bern, N.C., senior finished with 9 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

• PK Casey Barth converted all three of his PAT attempts on the day. Carolina has made 138 consecutive extra points and Barth has made a school-record 100 in a row. Barth's third PAT of the game was his 134th successful extra point, passing Jeff Hayes (133, 1978-81) for the UNC career record. Barth also extended his school record for career made field goals to 57 with a 20-yarder in the second quarter and a 41-yarder in the fourth.

• OG Jonathan Cooper started his 39th career game Saturday, most among active offensive linemen in the ACC and fifth-most among all current ACC players.

• The six points scored by East Carolina were the fewest in the series since UNC shutout the Pirates 56-0 in the 1981 contest.
