CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - As the spring semester wound to a close, UNC's Student-Athlete Advisory Council and Department of Athletics honored Carolina seniors at the sixth-annual Student-Athlete Graduation Reception on May 2 at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on campus. The event recognized student-athletes graduating in December 2011, May 2012 and December 2012 and also included families, coaches, professors, administrators and staff.
Carolina men's lacrosse coach Joe Breschi, a 1990 UNC graduate, served as the keynote speaker, posing four questions to the graduates:
How will you define success?
How will you handle adversity?
How will you apply the leadership skills you've learned as a student-athlete?
Will you to through life with great enthusiasm, embracing every moment of every day?
In closing, Breschi said, "As an alumnus, I thank you for making our university and our athletic department a better place."
The seniors and their families also heard from Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp, Assistant A.D. for Student-Athlete Development Cricket Lane and Senior Associate A.D. John Blanchard. SAAC president Meghan Lyons introduced the speakers.
The reception was created and organized by SAAC members six years ago as a way to honor senior student-athletes, particularly those who might not be able to attend UNC commencement ceremonies due to their competition schedules. Carolina's spring commencement is set for this Sunday, May 13.
Congratulations and best wishes to all of the Tar Heel seniors!
