Four Tar Heels Named To Inside Lacrosse All-America Team
Release: 05/15/2017

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Inside Lacrosse is proud to announce the first-ever Inside Lacrosse Media All-America Teams.  The teams were announced Sunday night at halftime of the Syracuse-Yale NCAA first round game on ESPNU.

Tar Heel senior defenseman Austin Pifani of Roslyn, Pa. was named to the third-team All-America squad.  Three other Tar Heels were named to the honorable mention team - junior attackman Chris Cloutier of Kitchener, Ontario, senior midfielder Stephen Kelly of Lutherville, Md., and senior midfielder Tate Jozokos of Wolfeboro, N.H.

Pifani started all 16 games for the Tar Heels in 2017, captaining the Tar Heels for the second straight season and leading North Carolina to the ACC Tournament championship.  Pifani led the Tar Heels with 22 caused turnovers this year and he was third on the team and first among close defensemen with 34 ground balls.

Jozokos had a spectacular senior campaign at short-stick defensive midfield.  He played in all 16 games and had 10 caused turnovers and 40 ground balls, second on the UNC team, and behind only face-off man Stephen Kelly.  Kelly finished his career in style with a brilliant senior campaign.  He won 181 of 344 face-offs and led Carolina with 103 ground balls.

As a junior Chris Cloutier led North Carolina in both goals scored with 36 and in points with 50.  He was second on the Tar Heel squad in assists with 14 and he was second in shooting percentage at 35.6 percent.

The three teams were compiled by more than 30 members of the lacrosse media who vote in the weekly Maverik Media Poll and are in tune with the national college lacrosse landscape week to week. This diverse group of opinions provides a strong consensus of who's the best of the best in DI men's college lacrosse. Their selections were made at the conclusion of the 2017 regular season and account for performances through May 8, 2017.

The All-America teams are a natural extension of Inside Lacrosse's role as the Source of the Sport — from the preseason All-America lists in the Face-Off Yearbook, through Midseason All-America lists and year-round coverage of the sport.

“Creating the Inside Lacrosse All-Americans has been a long time coming,” says Matt Kinnear, Editor-in-Chief of Inside Lacrosse. “The lacrosse media members from across the country have been privileged to watch these athletes perform, and we're happy we can honor them as other major outlets do in big-time college athletics.”
