Buies Creek, N.C. – North Carolina captured its sixth straight win on Tuesday night, shutting out Campbell University, 6-0. The Tar Heels out-hit the Camels 11-3 in the game en route to their fourth shutout of the season. With the win, UNC improves to 22-5 while CU falls to 15-14.
The first three batters in the order accounted for seven hits in the game, led by Berlynne Delamora who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and her 29th walk of the season. Taylor Wike went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, and Leah Murray was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Micaela Abbatine doubled, walked, stole a base and scored twice, and Katelyn Shifflett doubled in the fifth inning.
Sydney Matzko (3-2) went the first four innings for UNC, allowing just two hits and two walks with six strikeouts. ACC Pitcher of the Week Brittany Pickett tossed the final three innings, allowing a walk and a single with three strikeouts. The Tar Heel rookie, who has been a part of all four of UNC shutouts this season, sealed up her fifth save of the season, which leads all NCAA players this year and breaks UNC’s all-time single-season record.
Katie Baker (6-6) started for Campbell and allowed all six runs on 11 hits and two walks with two strikeouts over six innings. Amber Schisler came in after UNC had scored three runs in the seventh and retired three straight including two strikeouts.
Carolina used its speed to score three runs in the top of the third. Abbatine got the Heels going with a leadoff walk and a stolen base. Murray singled to center to put runners on the corners, then took off for second on the first pitch. The catcher threw down but no one was covering second, as Abbatine scored and Murray got all the way to third. A ground out by Wike sent Murray home, then Delamora drew a walk. Pinch runner Hailey Cole was the third Tar Heel to steal second in the inning, and an RBI single by Katie Bailiff made it 3-0 UNC.
Abbatine kicked off another three-run inning with a leadoff double in the top of the seventh. Murray followed with a bunt single and another stolen base, then Wike drilled a two-run triple to right center. An RBI single by Delamora, her third hit of the game, made it 6-0 to give Pickett a nice cushion heading into the final half inning.
Campbell led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and a single, but Pickett shut down the next three batters to close out the shutout and her school-record fifth save.
The Tar Heels’ road trip continues through the weekend with a visit to Virginia Tech for a three-game ACC series. The weekend opens at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 17, and continues with 1 p.m. games on Saturday and Sunday. The first two games of the series will air on ACC Network Extra.
