Wike got the Heels going in the bottom of the first with a single down the right field line and used heads up base running to steal second on the play. A hit batter and a walk loaded the bases, and Katie Bailiff sent the Tar Heel shortstop home on a ground out to short.
Shifflett led off the second with her first career triple to the corner in left, and Pickett followed with a two-run blast to make it 3-0 Carolina.
The Colonials took advantage of a Carolina error to score three unearned runs in the top of the third and tie the score at three. Taryn Miller led off with a walk. A dropped pop up allowed Stacy Capp to reach safely, then Olivia Lorusso walked to load the bases. Abrielle McCartney drove in the first run with a single to left field, forcing a call to the bullpen. Pickett drew a ground out for the second out, but Natalie Higgins came through with a two-run single to right to knot the score at three.
The Tar Heels took the lead back in the bottom of the third, as Destiny DeBerry laid down a bunt single and stole second and Pickett sent her home on an RBI double to the warning track in left center.
Carolina added two more in the bottom of the fourth, as Wike doubled and Delamora crushed a two-run bomb to make it 6-3 UNC.
UNC was kept off the board for the first time in the bottom of the fifth, leaving the bases loaded after a great snag by the third baseman on a hard-hit line drive by Delamora stranded three Heels.
Carolina tacked on four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, as an error by the shortstop prolonged the inning and allowed DeBerry to score. After claiming her first career stolen base with a swipe of second, Shifflett came home from third on a wild pitch, then Leah Murray made it 10-3 with a two-run single up the middle.
A one-out single was it for RMU’s offense in the top of the seventh, as Pickett caught a pop up to close out the game and capture her ninth win of the season.
