CHAPEL HILL --- Long Beach State secured a series win over No. 7 North Carolina with a 4-1 victory Saturday at Boshamer Stadium. John Sheaks and four relievers held the Tar Heels to one run on five hits, while Jarren Duran and Ramsey Romano had two hits each for the Dirtbag offense. Zack Gahagan had three of Carolina's five hits in support of Luca Dalatri, who allowed three runs in six innings to suffer his first loss of the year.
Long Beach (6-4) grabbed an unearned run in the top of the first before Carolina (8-3) even the score in the third. Tyler Lynn led off the inning with a triple off of Sheaks (1-1) and scored on a Brandon Martorano groundout.
The Dirtbags regained the lead right away, however, as Brock Lunquist singled and scored to make it 2-1 in the fourth. The visitors from southern California added insurance runs in the sixth and ninth as Sheaks and a quartet of relievers combined to keep the Tar Heel bats quiet.
Carolina's best chance to rally came in the eighth, when Gahagan singled, Warmoth walked and McGee walked to load the bases with two outs. But Connor Riley got Adam Pate looking to end the threat and Chris Rivera worked a 1-2-3 ninth to end it.
Warmoth extended his reached base streak to 26 games, though his 16-game hitting streak was snapped. Austin Bergner, Taylor Sugg, Brett Daniels and Bo Weiss combined to allow just one unearned run in thre innings of relief.
The series finale is set for noon Sunday.
