CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina women’s tennis team won its Atlantic Coast Conference home opener Friday with a 6-1 victory over Clemson at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The third-ranked Tar Heels improved to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in ACC play with the win, while the Tigers fell to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Carolina opened the match with an early 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point.
Hayley Carter and Jessie Aney, ranked third nationally, teamed at No. 1 doubles to earn a 6-2 victory. On court two, Chloe Ouellet-Pizer and Alexa Graham recorded a 6-2 win of their own to clinch the opening point.
No. 3 Carter was the first to finish in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Fernanda Navarro on court one.
On court five, 70th-ranked Makenna Jones added to the Tar Heel lead with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Constanza Gorches.
Moments later, No. 40 Graham clinched UNC’s 48th straight home match on court four, winning 6-2, 6-3 over Sydney Riley.
No. 19 Aney also won 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) against Marie Leduc on court three.
Clemson earned its first point on court two as Ayan Broomfield beat UNC’s fourth-ranked Sara Daavettila 6-4, 6-3.
Ouellet-Pizer finished the day with a victory on court six. After dropping her first set 6-4, she stormed back to win the second set 6-3 and closed out the match with an 11-9 win in a third-set tiebreaker.
The Tar Heels visit Boston College on Sunday at 10 a.m. for another ACC matchup.
