CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Tar Heels teamed up this month to bring holiday cheer to local kids. Through the Orange County Social Services’ Share Your Holidays program, UNC teams sponsored a total of 34 children and teens, providing toys and other gifts.
Student-athletes gathered donations from team members and coaches then shopped for their “adopted” kids, based on wish lists that had been provided by the recipients. On Dec. 10, a group of Tar Heels delivered the gifts to the Orange County Social Services collection site. From there, the gifts were sent out to help make the season merrier.
“Our team is always excited to spread the holiday spirit by shopping for families,” said Bryana Nguyen, a junior on the women’s golf team. “We know that there are people out there that are less fortunate than us, and we just wanted to help make their holiday special.”
Several offices and staff members within the Department of Athletics also participated. Overall, student-athletes, coaches and staff members donated more than $7,000 for the effort. In addition to the Share Your Holidays program, the Tar Heel efforts also included toy donations to the Toy Chest program, in which parents from low-income families can pick out gifts for their children.
