No. 15 Tar Heels Top Davidson, 10-3
Release: 03/05/2014
CHAPEL HILL --- No. 15 North Carolina won its seventh straight game with a 10-3 defeat of Davidson Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Sophomore Reilly Hovis got his second win of the season for Carolina with three scoreless and hitless innings of work in which he struck out five.

The two teams traded runs in the second inning for a tie that would last until the home half of the fifth. UNC (8-3) tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning to break the tie when Wood Myers doubled home Adam Pate with two outs. But the big blow would come in the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman Adrian Chacon started the scoring with a bases-loaded RBI single up the middle to score Michael Russell. The Tar Heels followed that with three more runs off a sac fly, wild pitch and a Davidson error give Carolina a 6-1 lead.

The Wildcats answered in the top of the seventh after A.J. Bogucki hit the leadoff man, and they followed with three consecutive singles and a sac fly to push two across and cut UNC's lead to 6-4.

Trevor Kelley, Zach Rice and Spencer Trayner combined to shut out the Wildcats for the rest of the game though, allowing just one hit and no runs between them. Rice had his longest outing of the year, retiring all five batters he faced.

The Tar Heels would tack on four more runs in both the seventh and eighth to increase their lead and ensure the midweek victory. Three of those runs came in the bottom of the eighth when Carolina drew five walks and also took advantage of an error and a HBP to seal the game.

Cody White took the loss for the Wildcats and fell to 0-1 on the year.

Myers had a pair of hits and reached base four times, extending his reached base streak to 11 games. Skye Bolt went 1-2 for the Tar Heels with three walks, a run scored and an RBI, and also robbed Davidson of extra bases with a leaping grab at the wall in the eighth.

Carolina will open its next series on Friday, March 7, at 3 p.m. in Chapel Hill against ACC newcomer Pittsburgh. Tickets are available at the Boshamer box office and on GoHeels.com.
