After back-to-back walks to lead off the bottom of the first, Skye Bolt reached on a fielder's choice when Tyler Zupcic was unable to make a throw to second. With the bases loaded, ASU starter Blake Burkett (0-2) issued consecutive walks to Michael Russell and Parks Jordan to make it 2-0. Burkett was then lifted in favor of Payton Smith, who walked Zengel and gave up a sacrifice fly to Adrian Chacon to make it 4-0. After a Zach Daly strikeout, Joe Dudek singled home two more runs to give UNC a 6-0 lead and match the team's scoring output from last weekend's series win against Xavier.
Carolina (4-3) added three more in the second, with Zengel's RBI double to right center the big blow, and hit 10 runs for the second time in 2014 with Jordan's two-out single in the third.
Luis Paula got his first start of the season on the mound and allowed just one unearned run and three hits in 4.2 innings with five strikeouts, though he did walk four batters. Reilly Hovis (1-1) finished the fifth and tossed a scoreless sixth to get the win. The sophomore righty got all four of his outs via the strikeout.
Taylore Cherry was perfect in his first appearance of the year, striking out a pair and needing just 19 pitches to record six outs. Freshman A.J. Bogucki closed it out with a scoreless ninth in his first outing as a Tar Heel.
Michael Pierson had two hits to lead Appalachian State (0-8). The Mountaineers have played eight road games to open 2014 with seven coming against nationally ranked competition.
