Release: 01/12/2014
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Diamond DeShields scored 25 points to lead No. 13/12 North Carolina to a 65-61 victory over No. 18/17 Florida State on Sunday from the Tucker Center.

North Carolina (14-3, 2-1 ACC) overcame a 12-point first-half deficit and trailed by six at halftime, but outscored the Seminoles 36-25 in the second half to notch its second win off the week over a top 25 ranked team.

Stephanie Mavunga had her ninth double-double of the year with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also had five blocks. Xylina McDaniel had 12 points and a couple big buckets down the stretch in the second half.

McDaniel gave Carolina its first second-half lead at the 7:49 mark with a pair of free throws. A 24-9 run erased an eight-point deficit that turned into a 60-53 lead with 3:43 to go.

The free throws by McDaniel marked the Tar Heels first lead since it was 11-9 at the 14:25 mark of the first half.

Morgan Jones led Florida State (14-2, 2-1 ACC) with 18 points. Seminole leading-scorer Natasha Howard suffered through foul trouble all game long and was limited to seven points in only 13 minutes.

Florida State led 36-29 at halftime and by as many as 12 points in the first half, though the Tar Heels put together an 8-0 run to get within 28-24 with a little over four minutes remaining in the first half.

The Seminoles answered with consecutive three-pointers to increase their lead back to double figures, but two free throw in the last second by Danielle Butts got Carolina within seven points at halftime.

DeShields (11) and Mavunga (9) combined for 20 of North Carolina's 29 points in the opening half.
