Release: 11/28/2013
RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico - Diamond DeShields scored a game-high 24 points to lead No. 11/12 North Carolina to a 93-60 victory over Arkansas State at the Cancun Challenge on Thursday at the Hard Rock Resort.

Xylina McDaniel added 16 points in 13 minutes for Carolina (5-1). Allisha Gray had 12 points, followed by Danielle Butts and Jessica Washington with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Stephanie Mavunga had 10 rebounds and three blocks to go with seven points.

Carolina shot 60.3 percent (35-of-58) from the field, while limiting the Red Wolves to only 25.7 percent shooting.

Jalen O'Bannon paced Arkansas State (4-2) with 15 points.

UNC put on a clinic in the first half, shooting 62.1 percent from the floor, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Heels made 9-of-11 free throws to score 50 points before halftime.

McDaniel paced the scoring attack early with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in only seven minutes, before her second foul put her on the bench for the remainder of the half.

DeShields picked up the slack by scoring 14 points in the first half on 6-of-10 shooting. She made back-to-back three-pointers, stole the ball later in the half and flew through the air for a layup and then stepped in to draw a charge on the defensive end.

She finished 10-of-15 from the floor in only 19 minutes.

The last seven minutes belonged to Washington as she added eight of the final 15 points of the first half as the lead grew to 29 points at intermission.

Arkansas State made only five buckets in the opening half to shoot 15.6 percent. The Red Wolves converted two field goals over the final 9:05 and managed only eight points during that time frame.

That allowed Carolina to piece together a 25-8 run take the 50-21 lead to the half.

UNC is averaging 96.7 points over the last three games.

Carolina will take on Arizona State Friday at 1 p.m., ET during the second day of the Cancun Challenge. The Sun Devils cruised past Illinois, 84-60, in the first game of the day.
