Tar Heels Dominate Chanticleers, 106-52

CHAPEL HILL - Freshmen scoring powered the No. 12 North Carolina past the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Thursday evening at Carmichael Arena. Leading the Tar Heels were freshmen Stephanie Mavunga and Diamond DeShields with 20 and 21 points, respectively.

Mavunga was 10-10 for the night also capturing 13 rebounds, five blocks, and three assists. DeShields sparked a first half-ending scoring streak that pulled the Tar Heels ahead by 22 points and to the point of never looking back in the 54-point margin win.

The Tar Heels opened the game with a 5-0 run, starting with a three-pointer from Xylina McDaniel followed by a long jumper from Mavunga. Coastal Carolina finally got on the board with a field goal at 18:41.

With under five minutes to play in the first half, DeShields sparking a scoring run with back-to-back-to-back field goals for six points, one steal, and an assist off a McDaniel lay-up. To finish the first half, Alisha Gray (14 points, four steals) and Jessica Washington (11 points, three assists, three steals) each sunk three-pointers to push the first half lead to 46-24.

Danielle Butts made her first appearance for the Tar Heels this season coming back earlier than expected from injury. Unfortunately Butts committed back-to-back fouls in her first two minutes of play. Butts made up for it in the second half going 4-5 (4-7 overall) for field goals and 3-4 from free throws for 11 points.

The Tar Heels came out strong in the second half with a Mavunga lay-up and another McDaniel three. The scoring margin continued to grow ultimately reaching 56 points with under a minute to play in the game.

Carolina held Coastal to 22.2-percent shooting for the night while shooting 51.7-percent. The Tar Heels also handed out 30 assists compared to a mere 14 turnovers, the best ratio the team has put out in 2013-14.
