McPherson Named ACC Player Of The Week
Release: 11/18/2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - North Carolina sophomore middle blocker Victoria McPherson was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Volleyball Player of the Week, after she helped keep North Carolina's ACC title hopes alive in an undefeated weekend.

Also cited for her performance was Syracuse freshman setter Erica Handley, as she earned her second Freshman of the Week honor of the season.

McPherson helped the Tar Heels pick up two key victories against Virginia Tech and Virginia, as North Carolina continues to stay in the hunt for the conference title. Against the Hokies, the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native recorded a .750 hitting percentage and five blocks in the three-set sweep.

In a 3-1 win over the Cavaliers, McPherson recorded a career-high eight blocks, 14 kills and a .370 hitting percentage. For the weekend, she posted 3.29 kills per set, 1.86 blocks per set and a .487 hitting percentage. McPherson's previous Player of the Week honor came on Sept. 23.

In a split weekend for Syracuse, Handley averaged 10.4 assists per set to up her season average to 8.87 assists per set overall and 9.27 assists per set in the ACC, both of which lead all rookie setters in the conference. Handley also continues to be lethal on the serve, totaling five aces on the weekend, including four in the finale win over the Terrapins. She leads the team with 27 this season.

Against Maryland, Handley dished out 48 assists, which is the second most in a four-setter for the Lakeville, Minn., native. She also recorded 1.86 digs per set across the two contests, enough for third highest on the team. That total included an eight-dig performance versus the Terrapins, the second highest output of Handley's career. The first of Handley's Freshman of the Week honors came on Oct. 28.
