UNC Draws Michigan St. in ACC/Big Ten
Release: 05/08/2013

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina men's basketball team will travel to East Lansing, Mich., to play Michigan State on Wednesday, December 4, 2013, in the 15th annual Atlantic Coast Conference/Big Ten Challenge presented by DICK's Sporting Goods, the ACC and ESPN announced today.

Carolina is 7-7 in the first 14 years of the event, winning seven of 10 Challenge games under head coach Roy Williams.

Last year, UNC lost at Indiana, and Michigan State lost at Miami. The Spartans are 6-7 in ACC/Big Ten Challenge history.

The Tar Heels will be playing the Spartans for the fifth time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Each team has won two of the previous four games. Michigan State defeated the Tar Heels in 1999-2000 and 2000-01, the first two seasons of the event, and UNC won in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Overall, the Tar Heels hold an 11-3 edge in the series, including wins in each of the last six games. The six games include three NCAA Tournament games (2009 national championship in Detroit, 2005 national semifinal in St. Louis and 2007 second round in Winston-Salem), two ACC/Big Ten Challenge games (2008-09 in Detroit and 2009-10 in Chapel Hill) and November 11, 2011, on the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson in San Diego, Calif.

This will be Carolina's third game in East Lansing. UNC defeated Michigan State, 81-58, on December 6, 1976, and lost to the defending national champion Spartans, 86-76, on November 29, 2000.

The ACC leads the Challenge, 10-3-1. Last year's Challenge ended in a 6-6 tie.

Michigan State is one of five Big Ten schools the Tar Heels have played in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. UNC is 2-2 against the Spartans, 2-0 against Ohio State, 1-0 against Wisconsin, 1-2 against Indiana and 1-3 against Illinois.

The complete schedule for 2013 includes:

Tuesday, December 3 - Florida State at Minnesota, Illinois at Georgia Tech, Indiana and Syracuse, Michigan at Duke, Notre Dame at Iowa, Penn State at Pittsburgh;

Wednesday, December 4 - North Carolina at Michigan State, Boston College at Purdue, Maryland at Ohio State, Miami at Nebraska, Northwestern at NC State and Wisconsin at Virginia.
