TAR HEELS WILL TRY TO EVEN ACC RECORD VS. TERPS

• North Carolina (11-5, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) returns to action after a week off and will look to square its ACC record at 2-2 this season when it hosts Maryland (14-3, 2-2 ACC) on Saturday at noon in the Smith Center.

• The game will be televised nationally by ESPN.  Dave O'Brien (play-by-play) and Doris Burke (analyst) will have the call.  It will also be available nationally on ESPN Radio.  Marc Kestecher (play-by-play) and Jim Spanarkel (analyst) will be on the radio mic.

• The Tar Heels will play Saturday's game following a weeklong rest between contests.  Last Satuday, Carolina beat Florida State 77-72 in Tallahassee.

• Maryland enters Saturday's game with a 14-3 record and a 2-2 mark in ACC play after 51-50 win on Wednesday night over No. 14 NC State in College Park.  The Terrapins also have beaten Virginia Tech in conference play this season while losing to Miami and Florida State.

• Carolina went 3-0 against the Terrapins last season, winning in College Park and Chapel Hill during the regular season and in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals in Atlanta.  The Tar Heels have won 10 of their last 14 against Maryland, including four in a row.

THE SERIES VS. THE TERRAPINS

• The Tar Heels lead the all-time series with Maryland, 118-57.  Carolina has won 10 of the last 14 in the series (including four in a row), last losing to the Terps on Feb. 7, 2010, in College Park.

• Last season, UNC won 83-74 in College Park, 88-64 in Chapel Hill and 85-69 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals in Atlanta.

• In 2010-11, UNC won the only meeting between the two schools with an 87-76 win in Chapel Hill.  The two teams also met just once in the 2009-10 season with Maryland winning in College Park.

• Carolina is 56-17 against Maryland in games played in Chapel Hill and 17-8 versus the Terrapins in the Smith Center.  The Terps' eight wins in the Smith Center are more than any other UNC opponent except Duke (12).

• UNC has won six of its last seven home games against Maryland with wins in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012 seasons.  The Terps won in Chapel Hill in 2008.

• Roy Williams is 10-5 versus Maryland as Carolina's head coach and 10-7 overall against the Terps.  Williams went 0-2 against Maryland while serving as Kansas' head coach.

THE WILLIAMS-TURGEON CONNECTION

• Maryland's Mark Turgeon is in his second year as the Maryland head coach, but his connections with UNC head coach Roy Williams are longstanding.

• Turgeon played point guard at Kansas from 1984-87, when former Tar Heel Larry Brown was the Jayhawks' head coach.  Turgeon graduated in '87 (prior to Williams' arrival as the Kansas head coach in the fall of 1988) but joined the Kansas coaching staff as an assistant under Brown for the 1987-88 season.

• When Brown left Kansas after the '88 NCAA championship, Kansas hired Williams as head coach and Turgeon joined his staff as an assistant.  Turgeon served under Williams alongside Tar Heel assistant coach Steve Robinson for four seasons at Kansas (1988-89 season through the 1991-92 season).

• Williams is 3-0 as the Tar Heel head coach against Turgeon after beating Maryland three times last year.
